Do you get enough magnesium each day? An estimated 80% of Americans are deficient in this important mineral.
Research studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can help lower high blood pressure, lower the risk of developing diabetes, decrease the symptoms of PMS, reduce migraine symptoms, and help depression and anxiety. Magnesium has also been shown to help muscle cramps, as well as constipation, kidney stones, osteoporosis, insomnia, fibromyalgia and asthma. [source]
Luckily, this sugar-free spritzer makes getting an extra does of magnesium easy and delicious!
This bubbly drink features Natural Calm, a powdered magnesium supplement that I’ve been using for a few years. I’ve found it helpful during stressful times, especially when traveling. The main ingredient in Natural Calm is magnesium citrate, which is thought to be the most affordable and easily absorbed type of magnesium. (Magnesium oxide, on the other hand, I do not recommend. It’s poorly absorbed and, as a result, can cause some unpleasant side effects.)
The plain flavor of Natural Calm is a little difficult to enjoy on its own, so I prefer the Raspberry Lemon flavor, which is sweetened with organic stevia. Perfect for those of you avoiding sugar! Natural Calm is also available in Cherry, Orange and Lemon flavors, so feel free to experiment!
I’ve been known to drink this stuff straight, just mixed in water, but creating this spritzer does make it a little more fun–> like a mineral-rich, sparkling lemonade.

Hope you enjoy this extra dose of magnesium!
*Note: I don’t recommend drinking carbonated water on a regular basis, as carbonated gas (which is added to the water) has been linked to dental erosion and gastrointestinal issues. If you are weaning yourself off regular or diet soda, this is a great transition option! However, if you’d like to make this drink even healthier, skip the carbonated water and use still water instead. You’ll still have a delicious drink!

Reader Feedback: Have you ever tried Natural Calm, or any other type of magnesium supplement?
Disclosure: Natural Vitality provided me with complimentary samples of their products, but I was under no obligation to write a positive review or to create a recipe. I have been using this product for years, and will never feature a product on this blog that I don’t personally use or endorse.
HI…i’ve been using Calm as a mag supplement also but have found it causes inflamation in my gums! crazy…. i started using it for constipation…once every other day. I had to stop
I’ve never heard of that before! I’d probably stop using it if that happened to me, too!
I love Natural Calm! The Raspberry Lemon flavor is definitely the best.
Interesting idea to try – thanks! I read the link about potential risks of soda water and was left with a different conclusion. It didn’t seem to show a substantial increase in dental erosion or calcium loss.
You’re right, that link wasn’t the best example. I’ve updated the link to another page stating that studies have come to the conclusion that it does cause dental erosion… though, I’m sure there are plenty of contradictory reports out there! I’ve heard so many conflicting opinions, I’m not sure what to believe. I just want to make sure people don’t think I’m endorsing carbonated water as a “health drink.” 🙂
This looks delicious! I will have to find some Natural Calm with the stress of school coming up!
You can use discount code FB40 and purchase the product at http://shop.naturalvitality.com for a 40% discount 🙂
I’m confused, the website you linked to states that carbonated water was only slightly connected to dental erosion and the claims about calcium loss were unfounded.
Yes, that wasn’t the best example. I’ve updated the link to another page which states that studies have proven the dental erosion aspect. Obviously, there are plenty of contradictory reports out there! I’ve heard so many conflicting opinions, I’m not sure what to believe. I just want to make sure people don’t think I’m endorsing carbonated water as a “health drink.”
Carbonated water has carbon dioxide in it – which is death to oxygen in cells!
Yes, I use it for constipation, so beware of that side effect if you don’t need the help! 🙂
Love this. Where’s the pin it button for this?
Thanks, Susan! There’s a pin it button at the bottom of each post.
A naturopath prescribed mag citrate for me and I was amazed I slept better. Both mag citrate and vit d supplements helped me wean off anti-depressants more easily (medically supervised). Just increase slowly to avoid loose bowels.
I’ve seen this at Whole Foods but have never bought it. Thanks for the post giving is the scoop about it. I wonder if one of the flavored varieties would be advisable to add to a child’s plain water beverage, like the Amazing Grass powder for kid? Also, do you know if it’s organic or non-GMO? Thanks Megan!
We also have a Kids Calm Multi version: http://naturalvitality.com/natural-kids-calm-multi/ To add Natural Calm to a plain water beverage for Kids check the RDA with your Health Practitioner to determining the recommended dosage. Yes, Natural Calm uses Organic flavors and is NON-GMO verified.
I did use the Calm Magnesium supplement for a while but it affected my taste as the supplement was too strong for my taste buds. I found out my issue was poor mineral absorption from a low functioning adrenal gland and leaky gut due to a whole host of ransom foods…so for continued use, I recommend healing your gut and balancing your body so that supplements are not necessary on a daily basis. But a dose or so while traveling…when you maybe can’t eat optimally can be beneficial.
This looks like such a refreshing drink! I’m not a fan of carbonated water, but I’ll be sure to try this with still water.
I use Natural Calm everyday to help prevent migraines and constipation (from pregnancy). I keep the rasp-lemon flavor packets at work for an easy dose and I have a container of plain powder at home. I like to add a drop or two of lemon essential oil to the plain flavor. Yum! It already has a natural effervescence so I just add filtered tap water.
How Yummy!
Can anyone tell me more about the link between low magnesium and migraines? Coincidentally someone else just told me today that since they’ve been taking magnesium their migraines are much less frequent.
Researchers haven’t proved it, but they noticed that people suffering from migraines tend to have lower magnesium and serotonin levels than people who don’t get migraines. Personally, I found that I get less severe and less frequent migraines when I supplement.
It’s interesting that a lot of our serotonin production is in the intestines, and magnesium helps move stuff through. Maybe that’s the link. I know if I eat a wheat or dairy-heavy meal, I get constipated and more prone to a migraine. Maybe all the magnesium is doing is moving that wheat/dairy sludge through so my intestines can produce the serotonin that it can’t when I’m clogged up. Just my thoughts.
this link has some good info and research numbers…
