This Detox Smoothie is like drinking a liquid vitamin! The ingredients in this particular smoothie are carefully chosen to flood your body with nutrients, without using any specialty powders or expensive supplements. Instead, you just need a few fruits and vegetables that you may already have in your fridge!
What Makes This a “Detox” Smoothie?
As you may know, I don’t believe in drastic detox diets and cleanses. I think the only real way to detox your body is to consistently enjoy more whole foods and eat less processed ones that contain artificial coloring, flavors, and ingredients. This smoothie will help you do just that!
Detox Smoothie Ingredients
The ingredients in this smoothie are loaded with nutrients, and in turn, should help to support your body’s natural detox organs, including the kidneys, liver, and skin.
Here are some of the potential health benefits:
- Green Apple: This particular apple is lower in sugar than the red variety, and apples, in general, may help in weight loss by making you feel fuller longer. One study has shown that eating an apple a day may be almost as effective as taking a statin drug at reducing the risk for heart disease. The pectin that apples contain acts as a prebiotic and may promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut, too!
- Pineapple: Rich in antioxidants, this tropical fruit also contains bromelaine, a protein digesting enzyme. It helps break protein down into into amino acids, and as a result may boost digestion. This digestive enzyme may also help to boost immunity and lower inflammation in the body. (source)
- Banana: Bananas are a great source of potassium, and potassium-rich diets may help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. According to Healthline, one 13-year study showed that women who eat bananas 2 to 3 times a week may have a 33% lower risk of developing kidney disease.
- Ginger: Ginger is considered to have anti-inflammatory effects in the body and may help to lower fasting blood sugar levels. (source) It has also been shown to speed up digestion, causing the stomach to empty faster.
- Spinach: This leafy green is neutral in flavor when you add it to a smoothie, and this study has shown that it may help to prevent oxidative damage in the body. Spinach also contains powerful plant compounds and antioxidants, like lutein and kaempferol, that are thought to promote eye health and decrease the risk of cancer.
- Cilantro: This fresh herb contains a compound called dodecanal that has been shown to have antibacterial effects against salmonella. It is also thought to combat against heavy metal toxicity, which is why it so commonly added to detox drinks and recipes. (source)
- Lime: Limes are loaded with antioxidants and are a great source of vitamin C, which may help to boost your immune system! Vitamin C has been shown to increase the production of white blood cells in test tube studies, which may help to protect against infections and disease.
With all of these ingredients, this smoothie is loaded with fiber that will help keep you feeling full and satisfied, without a lethargic or sluggish feeling that can come from eating something less nutritious. I find that when I start my day with a smoothie, I tend to eat better for the rest of the day, too. (And that’s the goal, right?)
Will This Smoothie Help You Lose Weight?
Since this detox smoothie is loaded with nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, I think it’s a good choice if you’re trying to lose weight. The pectin found in apples and the fiber in all of these ingredients will help keep you full, and if you use it as a meal replacement you may end up eating fewer calories than you normally would, which may also contribute to weight loss.

Recipe Notes:
- Feel free to make any substitutions that you’d like to in this recipe. Parsley is a good alternative for the cilantro, and frozen mango works as a good swap for pineapple. If you don’t care for bananas in a smoothie, try using 1/4 of an avocado instead to add creaminess.
If you try this recipe, please let me know how you like it in the comments below! And if you try a substitution, I’d love to hear about it, too. We can all learn from your experience!

Reader Feedback: What’s your favorite smoothie combination?
This is so good! I never put apples in my smoothies, but I think I should start doing that more often because this smoothie kept me full until lunch!
I love how you always use real foods in your smoothie recipes, because every protein powder I’ve tried just ruins them! This smoothie is refreshing and delicious, and even though I’m not the biggest fan of cilantro, I trust you and this was perfect! I feel SO healthy drinking this. LOL
This detox smoothie is so good! I’ve been drinking it for the last 5 days, and I swear my skin is looking clearer. I’m hooked!
I was like, please let me like this, please let me like this, then I took the first sip and was pleasantly surprised. It was yummy. I may add some wild blueberries but skip the banana next time. Or maybe keep the banana. I don’t know if it would be too much but worth trying. Thank you for this.
Hello,
I tried this recipe with a few substitutions. I substituted the following:
Parsley for Cilantro
Ground Ginger instead of fresh, I didn’t have fresh ginger. I used a 1/2 tsp.
Lemon for lime.
With the substitutions the shake tested good!
Next I go to the grocery store I will pick up Cilantro, fresh ginger and limes!
Thanks for the recipe! It’s easy to make!
Hello from Greece!! I found your blog and since yesterday ,thank you for all the information in your article. It’s the list I’ve been searching for. I appreciate your time putting it together. Awesome!
I am so excited!!
Thank you,thank you,thank you!!!!
I loved this! My bananas weren’t frozen, so I added ice. I also used dried cilantro because I already had it. Not only did I enjoy it, but I recommended it in my recent IG post.
Love this smoothie!!
Taste amazing !!
I love how this recipe says it has no weird ingredients! I totally can relate to what you said. Sometimes a girl just wants normal ingredients to make herself a normal detox smoothie sheesh…..
Thank you so much for this recipe 🙂
This is tastier than I imagined. I initially thought I had too much cilantro but realized I was tasting the combination of things.
I am concerned about such a high carbohydrate count.
Actually nicer than I was expecting. Quite refreshing and summery. And it’s full of goodness so what’s not to love!
This smoothie was delicious
Can I add fresh bananas instead of frozen ones?
Yes, it will just change the texture slightly– not as ice-cream like. You may also want to use less water for blending in that case, since the bananas will break down faster.
I didn’t have frozen ones so i just used a banana but i will be putting one in my freezer tonight. Over all it was good
I tried this using fresh banana, fresh pineapple, and adding some ice; it is delicious. Really well balanced, slightly spicy, and more sweet than green tasting. A lovely way to start the day. Thank you!
I tried it and enjoyed it. I’m new to this smoothie thing so I’m exploring all options hoping to lose weight. My personal opinion is that it’s a 4 out of 5. Ginger is an acquired taste but it’s very refreshing.
What can you use if your allergic to apple, bananas and oranges?
You can swap out any fruit that you can tolerate, and adjust the ingredients to your liking.
How much ingredients for a single serving?
This recipe is for a single serving.
Best smoothie ever! I have 1 daily. I will be taking measurements to see if i have lost any weight in 3 weeks 🙂
Hey Kelli! Any luck with the weight loss? I will be trying this too
Really want to lose wait..what do you recommed?
Hi Kelli-did you have luck with the weight loss? If so, did you eat any meals or just smoothies?
I absolutely love this smoothie.I can feel the difference in my morning.Starting out pretty good.I definitely will make this apart of my smoothie regimen. Thanks Detoxinista👍👌😘
Thanks for helping change up our smoothie options! We forgot the banana and still tasted yummy! Added frozen kale stems bc that’s what we had.
Today is my first day and I absolutely love it. It taste good and I feel full. Thank you for your recipes.
I love smoothie and I wish to know how to mix and which ingredients..you receipt is easier please share
I made this and fell in love with the taste. It was so sweet! I did not have lime juice, so I substituted lemon juice. I also used Minute Maid Zero Sugar Mango Passion for the liquid. It was like having a dessert. I loved it and will be adding it to my personal recipe book I keep for my quick reference.
Using a sugar substitute like aspartame… Zero sugar… Is very bad for you. Our bodies don’t know how to get rid of the aspartame. Studies have shown that aspartame is linked to cancer. Also studies have shown that aspartame leads to a larger waist size. So really drinking the diet drinks makes you gain weight. A good way to lower your blood sugar levels is to incorporate cinnamon in some of your foods. Please I beg everyone not to drink zero sugar products it should be illegal. Most of Europe has already banned it along with Gatorade and Sunny d. Big pharma doesn’t want you knowing that
This is SO TRUE! Having a child with allergies and being the label police, it’s amazing what the US allows that other countries don’t. In the UK food dye banned in foods bc they’re shown to be carcinogenic. Yet, kid friendly foods and vitamins contain food dyes here in the US. Everyone should be reading labels. PS…can’t wait to try this smoothie, my kids have a smoothie every morning with Maine blueberries (higher in antioxidants), banana and cilantro. They love it! Thanks for your commitment to health!
I really like the sound of this recipe and will be trying it tomorrow. Just one thing about aspartame. Yes, it has been connected to cancer and is seriously unhealthy but it is unfortunately not yet banned in Europe. I believe it’s a TikTok rumour. I live in Germany, where aspartame ist still in a whole range of products. As is the case in the other European countries I have been to. The World Health Organisation still believes a small amount is OK 🙁
Hi
Its going to be my first time. Love the fact that it takes banana as well as easy ingredients.
How many times a day should I drink it and your personal opinion as to how many days, 3 days, 5 days?
I love this smoothie, although I have made a couple of adjustments.
I use lemon instead of lime(as I have a lemon tree in my garden) and I add 100ml of aloe vera juice.
It’s extremely tasty, very filling and certainly keeps me fuler for longer than my usual breakfast.
I have started to buy more of the ingredients and now I prepare the apple, half a banana, cut spinach, pineapple into little freezer bags for emergencies or if I’m in a hurry too.
I added cucumber also I hope is okay for my health?
Absolutely love it! Best way to start a day and very true, it keeps me fuller for longer! My apples are finished 😩, i have grapes left (green), do you think i could sub the grapes for the apple? Thanks so much, Tanja
Nice recipe
Tastes really good. There’s a good combination of flavours and it’s doesn’t taste leafy at all. I find the lime juice makes it a little acidic, but I have a pretty acid sensitive stomach, so for most people it probably isn’t acidic at all. Over all really good and I’m excited to try some of your other smoothie recipes 😁
This is incredibly good and the combo sounded so strange. I love cilantro, but in a smoothie? This is the second smoothie I have had from this site and both are refreshing and satisfying. I am transitioning from 20-22 hours of fasting a day to eating every three hourse to help stop binge eating and found your site as part of the research int this journey. I am so grateful to you for your honesty and these recipes. Makes taking these steps much easier. I also hadn’t had a smoothie in years because I read that breaking down fruits and veggies in a blender defeats the purpose, but now I see the joy in smoothies again.
Is it possuble to make a whole week’s worth of smoothies ahead of time or do they lose nutrients and or taste over time?
I don’t think they would taste very good by the end of the week if you store them in the fridge. I’ve never kept a smoothie for longer than 24 hours in the fridge, and I’ve noticed a taste difference even after that long. To make them ahead of time, I would either make smoothie bags that you can dump into the blender for a fast morning (so you just have to add liquid) or blend it all at once and then freeze it into ice cube trays. You can either let the smoothie cubes thaw in a cup each morning, or blend it again to pulverize the cubes back into a smoothie texture with a little liquid.
Such pleasant surprise. All flavors complemented each other for a refreshing summery smoothie. I’m not a big fan of sweet smoothies and this one hits just the perfect amount of sweet.
Made 2 servings to share with hubby and only used 1 apple (for fear it would be too sweet) but nope, just perfect. Will be making it many more times.
This has become one of my go to breakfast smoothies. I absolutely love it. Im a big fan of Amy & Brian coconut water. I like add that instead of water or do half and half, if I have it on hand I will add cucumber and celery. For the most part. I follow you receipe. Thanks Megan!
I left out the pineapple and added some spuralina yummy!!!
First time looking at your blog and tried the green detox. Wonderful. Do you have daily post for different smoothies?
Weight down is what I am trying to achieve.
I made this for the first time today. I’m not a fan of cilantro so next time I’ll try something else. My Ninja blender left this with tiny bits of leaves which I wasn’t thrilled with. The texture wasn’t creamy at all. Maybe my banana half was too small as it was from a smaller banana. Idk but I’ll try again
I tried this its amazing never thought a detox juice would taste so yummy
Very easy to make great tasty enjoyed it…
I’m going to try this starting tomorrow.
Wow! This is my first detox smoothie and it is delicious. I’m writing after a few sips. Since I’m allergic to raw apples, I left that ingredient out. I used what I had at home: OJ and a bit of water to make it more liquid, parsley instead of cilantro, frozen mango instead of pineapple, lemon instead of lime. I love how fresh it tastes!
This is the best recipe, I would like to make it😋👍🏾👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
First smoothie experience and was pleasantly surprised! Followed the recipe exactly with the exception of using fresh pineapple instead of frozen. Liked it so much I will be making and freezing smoothie bags with this recipe! Thanks so much!
Thank you for the recipe, can i use both avocado and banana?
I haven’t tried this yet, but I definitely will! I just wanted to ask how often do you recommend drinking this per month? Thanks!
Literally the best smoothie I’ve finally been able to make. Ever since trying this recipe for the first time, I’ve been making it over and over again. It even got my husband addicted to it. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Truly excellent!
i love this recipe. It always gives me a boost when I have had a sluggish week and need to get my diet back on track. I try to drink 2 per day, 2 snacks, and a meal. I intermittent fast so this is a great 1st meal of the day for me.
I love your recipes and your website is beautiful. Can’t wait to try this one. Question: what are your thoughts on using canned pineapple?
Thank you Laura I have diabetics an experiencing side effects I need to lose weight fast
I tried it today and it was absolutely perfect. Thank you for sharing.
Dang it! I CAN’T have ginger or pineapple. Imma use cinnamon and watermelon or just go without. Thanks though and I’ll let you know how it taste.
what blender do you use to make everything liquify.
I use a refurbished Vitamix. I actually just posted a list of my favorite kitchen tools, with some honorable mentions if you need to shop by price point!
