This Apple Smoothie is unbelievably good. Paired with cinnamon and peanut butter, it has a creamy texture and tastes like Fall in a cup!
Can You Put a Whole Apple in a Smoothie?
There’s no need to peel the apple for this recipe, but I do recommend cutting away the core and seeds. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide (a poison) when it comes into contact with the digestive enzymes in our bodies.
It’s not likely that you’d get cyanide poisoning from eating only a few apple seeds, but I think it’s best to stay on the safe side and discard the seeds before making this smoothie.
Which Apples Are Best for Smoothies?
I think sweet apples work best for this smoothie, like Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp, but you can use practically any variety that you have on hand.
For a more tart flavor, try using green apples.
Can you freeze Apples for Smoothies?
Yes! Here’s how to freeze apples, and once you have them you can use frozen apples in this smoothie, instead of a fresh one. It’s a great way to use up apples you have on hand, before they go bad!
When using frozen apples for this smoothie, you’ll need to use a full 1 cup of liquid (possibly even a little bit more) and you can omit the ice, since the frozen apple will add a thick, icy texture.
I prefer this smoothie when it’s made with fresh apples, as it’s a little less fibrous in texture, but either way works!
How to Make It
Here’s what you’ll need for this apple smoothie:
- Apple
- Frozen Banana (how to freeze bananas)
- Peanut Butter (here’s how to make homemade peanut butter)
- Ground Flax (optional, but helps make it more filling)
- Cinnamon
- Milk (I use almond milk)
Just add the ingredients to a blender, and blend until smooth. It might seem like this recipe doesn’t call for enough liquid, but the apple will liquefy in the blender, so just wait and see! You can always add more liquid, if you need to.
For a slushy texture, I like to add a few ice cubes and then blend again.
The added ice helps to minimize the fibrous texture of the apples, so it tastes like you’re drinking an apple milkshake!
Perfect Apple Smoothie
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 medium apple , cut into chunks (7 oz.; I use Gala apples)
- 1/2 frozen banana (3.5 oz)
- 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds (5 grams)
- 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or milk of choice)
- 1 cup ice cubes (about 4-5 large cubes)
Instructions
- In a high-speed blender, combine the apple, banana, flax, peanut butter, cinnamon, and milk. Blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down the blender as needed. The apple should become liquified, which will add more "liquid" to the mix, but if you need to add extra liquid, you can start by adding 2 tablespoons at a time.
- Once the mixture is totally smooth, add in the ice and blend again until a slushy texture is achieved. Serve right away for the best texture and flavor.

Reader Feedback: What’s your favorite way to use apples?
Can I try it with soy milk? I’m not sure how will it taste.
Sure, I don’t see why not! Since it’s such a small amount of liquid, it doesn’t impact the flavor too much.
Such a good smoothie!! I love the taste of fall in a smoothie. I added slightly more milk and no ice to make it more of smoothie texture, came out delicious!
Hi Megan,
Thank You for this recipe. Its sounds awesome. I am gathering the ingredients after I write this comment and will be making this. Its funny because one of my go to’s during quarantine has been organic fuji apples with almond butter. I eat it daily so this recipe is basically the same but in a smoothie method. I am also planning on making the vegan snicker bars today and for lunch I made your chickpea with avocado and I put in on cauliflower flats. (I don’t eat bread).
So my day of eating has been solely your recipes.. I appreciate you and love you..
All my best, Debra
I used oat milk and no ice and it was delicious. It really does taste like fall in a cup!
Made it for my son today and had some myself. We both loved it! Thanks for all the great recipes you share!
I’m so glad you both enjoyed it, Kathleen!
Oh em gee! This smoothie recipe is amazing. Just made it and wow—yum. It’s rich and creamy and dreamy.
I’m so glad you like it, Jessica. Thanks for letting me know!
Very tasty! And easy for breakfast!!
Great for fall or something different! I’m normally a chocolate banana fan, but this was definitely a welcome change and a good way to get an apple in!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Carrie!
This one is absolutely delicious! Thank you, Megan, you are a genius.
This is Apple Smoothie is actually perfect it’s the BEST!!!
What a perfect smoothie! I added spinach and zucchini without a noticeable difference in taste… this recipe is a gem.
What an amazing treat! Who needs icecream? This is delicious. I never knew how much I loved frozen apples! I don’t think I could ever put an un-frozen apple in a smoothie ever again.
Thank you so much, Tomena! I’m glad you enjoyed this smoothie recipe!
Yummy! I made this with oat milk and instead of peanut butter I used Justin’s maple almond butter. So good!
I didn’t use ice but probably will next time for better texture.
Thank you!
This was delicious! I love apple recipes for Fall. I will definitely be having it again. Thank you!
New to the “healthy” world and this was DELICIOUS! Thank you!
Omg this was absolutely delicious. I’m obsessed
Added almond butter and a little more almond milk. Also I added 1/2 banana not frozen, no time for freezing…..loved this
Wow, delicious. I put in extra cinnamon because it’s my life. I might dial back the pb to a level Tbsp mine is competing with the apple. But this is a smoothie I’ll chug frequently. I used frozen apple and banana chunks, so upped to 1 cup of almond milk, and just needed a splash of water during the onslaught to get the blades whirring again. I have to say, I was a little worried about the frozen apple, mostly because of the peel. My blender is a second-hand Osterizer, and it took about 5 minutes of minimal movement and a little tinkering before absolute freedom, but it worked just fine!
Thank you for this recipe. Love the flavor combination.
This is an awesome way to get in an apple a day. I love that the apple does not need to be peeled since a lot of nutrition is in the peel. I used more unsweetened almond milk to make the smoothie thinner, almond butter instead of peanut butter (I’m trying to get in more almond, too, for their nutrition), I added ground cardamom, ground cloves, and ground ginger, and I nixed adding ice at the end. Wow! This really exceeded my expectations.
Fantastic! Was honestly not expecting it to taste this good. I somewhat skeptically added the peanut butter and the apples with peel. The funny thing is, I have 4 teenagers who like apples but won’t eat them if there is the slightest imperfection, meaning I am constantly eating imperfect apples. If I don’t, they get old and I never know what to do wtih them. Well, now I have a solution! It’s important when making this smoothie to blend it completely, the peel gets churned up which means the result is not gritty. Very tasty!
